Purpose of Awards
The New Hampshire Mathematics and Science Teacher of the Year Awards are intended to be awarded annually, one each to a high school, middle school and elementary grade teacher, to recognize excellence in the teaching and learning of mathematics and/or science in New Hampshire schools. Excellence include:
  • Creative use of class material;
  • Development of innovative curricula, materials or class activities;
  • Integration of extra-curricular programs; and/or
  • Involvement of professional organizations to help promote interest and learning in mathemetics and/or science.
Presentation of Awards
Three Mathematics and Science Teacher of the Year Awards (one at each of the three grade levels) shall be presented each year by the New Hampshire Society of Professional Engineers (NHSPE) on behalf of the Sponsoring Organizations. The intent is to recognize both mathemetics teachers and science teachers at each grade level. The awards shall be presented at the annual Engineers’ Week Banquet held each year in February. Plaques bearing the name and insignia of each Sponsoring Organization shall be presented to each award recipient. NHSPE shall issue press releases in local and statewide newspapers publicizing the issuance of the awards. A stipend will be provided to award winners to help fund the cost of teaching materials and supplies.

Nominations
Award nominations shall be made by teaching colleagues, school administrators, or others on forms provided by the Sponsoring Organizations. Nominations shall be due in early January each year (see Nomination form).

Award Decisions
A committee consisting of one representative appointed by each of the Sponsoring Organizations shall review the nominations received and shall, by consensus, recommend one proposed award recipient at each grade level to the Board of Directors of NHSPE. The award committee shall forward the nomination forms and supporting documentation for the three recommended award recipients to the NHSPE Board of Directors for NHSPE Board approval. NHSPE shall notify award recipients on behalf of the Sponsoring Organizations. NHSPE shall also send a letter to each nominee offering congratulations on their nomination for this statewide award.

Cost Responsibility
The New Hampshire Society of Professional Engineers and the New Hampshire Section of the American Society of Civil Engineers shall be responsible for the cost of preparing plaques for each award recipient and for the cost of banquet attendance by the award recipients and one guest each. NHSPE, NH ASCE, and UNH CEPS shall provide funding for the stipends issued to award winners.
